Because I get a lot of questions about whether or not my dog is vegan, I decided to make a post:
It’s totally possible for dogs to have a plant based diet because, unlike cats, they’re omnivores and have the ability to break down protein in other forms.
However, it was really important to me not to supplement the lack of meat with grains, corn, or soy because that’s not what he would be going after in nature.
Thankfully he loves kale, herbs, celery, bananas, carrots, coconut, apples, blueberries, pumpkin and of course sweet potatoes! (Honestly, he eats better than most humans)
But I have struggled with how “species specific” it is when he instinctually runs after bunnies in the field...😒 With that said, friends, and grandma, will up-cycle some already chewed bones for him to have a taste... which he is most grateful for.
Its a balance, but to the best of my ability, I’ve personally chosen to omit my contribution to an industry that I objectively don’t support.
If you do choose to feed your dog a meat based diet, I suggest trying to acquire raw scraps, fish skin, or soon to be expired product from your grocery store that will already be going to waste.
It’s also still really helpful to incorporate things like pumpkin or sweet potato that are great for their digestion. It’ll help you gauge how backed up your dog is... because he’ll poop orange, or in this case purple 😬💜
